Pandit Sundarlal Sharma

Pandit Sundarlal Sharma was born on 21st December, 1881 at "Chamshur" small village near Rajim district Raipur. He was among the fore fronts of freedom fighter who stood for social justice, equality and non-violence. In 1921 Mahatma Gandhi came to Raipur the credit for bring him to Chhattisgarh goes to Shri Sundarlal Sharma. In 1929 he started "Canal SatyaGrah" in the village kandel. He rendered important contribution in developing political awareness in Chhattisgarh region. He was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's programme of alleviating the plight of the untouchables and it remained a lifelong aim of Pandit Sharma.

He got an ashram to establish girls school and for the upliftment of the "Harijans". The motto of Pt. Sharma's life was Do not move away from truth in life or death. The same motto later on became Gandhi ji's famous slogan "Do or Die".

Apart from being in politics, he was also a social reformer and social evils like casteism, untouchability and economic exploitation always haunted him and to overcome these he advised people to follow the path shown by Gandhi Ji.

He died in 1940 leaving behind a legacy of dedicated patriotic fervor and social activism. For his unique contribution to society he is regarded as "Gandhi of Chhattisgarh". As a mark of respect and gratitude to this great son of the soil this Institution has been named after him for the values and dignity of labour that he stood for with Mahatma Gandhi.

Genesis

The Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE) is an apex research and development organization in the field of vocational education. It is a constituent unit of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), established in 1993 by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. The Institute has a picturesque 38-acre campus at Shyamla Hills in Bhopal. It comprises six academic disciplines, namely Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Business and Commerce, Engineering and Technology, Health and Paramedical Science, Home Science and Hospitality Management and Humanities, Science, Education and Research with 05 Centres

The Institute is also a UNEVOC (International Project on Technical and Vocational Education) Network Centre in India, which coordinates all the activities, including communication with UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre, Bonn, Germany. Through the network, the Centre shares knowledge and experiences related to all aspects of VET, exchange country experiences, and discuss issues of common relevance.

Roles and Functions

The major roles and functions of the Institute are as follows:

  • Advise and assist the Central and State/UT Governments in the implementation of vocationalisation of education in schools.
  • Develop guidelines, curricula, courseware and e-learning materials for a wide spectrum of target groups, including children with special needs.
  • Develop vocational courses and programs under the National Skill Qualification Framework.
  • Offer a wide spectrum of courses and training programs for capacity building of key functionaries and vocational teachers.
  • Ensure better regulation and quality assurance of delivery of Vocational Education and Training.
  • Collaborate with national and international organizations/institutions/ agencies for promotion of VET.
  • Undertake research projects in collaboration with national and international organizations.
  • Organize national and international seminars, conferences, and workshops to provide a forum for discussion and strategic directions for effective implementation of skill development programs.
